Sell More Made in USA to Reduce Motivation for More Tariffs

June 15, 2018

The increasing advantages of producing in the U.S. for the North American market are driving retailers and manufacturers to reshore. Companies announced the reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) of approximately 170,000 manufacturing jobs in 2017, up 50 percent from 2016 and 2,800 percent from 2010. Most of the reshoring is in consumer goods. The recent tariff changes do pose concern for the housewares industry. In this presentation, Harry Moser will present alternatives that are more beneficial than tariffs.

Attendees will also learn about some of the free tools offered by the Reshoring Initiative, including:

  • TCO Estimator for sourcing decisions and selling vs. offshore competitors.
  • Library for seeking customers and competitors that are reshoring.
  • Summary of surveys on consumer preferences for Made in USA.
  • Resources for retail suppliers to help companies decide what products to reshore and how to achieve competitive costs.

Reshoring Initiative

Harry Moser founded the Reshoring Initiative in 2010 to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. Prior to starting the Initiative, Moser had a 35-year career with high-end machine tool supplier GF Machining Solutions, starting as president in 1985 and retiring in 2010 as chairman emeritus. Largely due to the success of the Reshoring Initiative, Moser was inducted into the Industry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2010 and was named Quality Magazine’s 2012 Quality Professional of the Year.  He participated in President Barack Obama’s Insourcing Forum at the White House in 2012, won The Economist debate on outsourcing and offshoring in 2013 and received the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Industry Advocacy Award in 2014.Moser is frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Financial Times, New Yorker and USA Today, and appears on Fox Business, MarketWatch and other national TV and radio programs.
