Get to know the people behind the stylish products that will appear at the 2014 International Home + Housewares Show in Discover Design. We introduce exhibitors to give you a glimpse of the inspirations, influences and ideas that go into creating the exciting products that you’ll see in March at McCormick Place.
Today we get acquainted with ASD Living, headquartered in Carson, Calif. ASD Living specializes in textiles—aprons, totes and table linens. Their product lines include Dr. Seuss character items, organic aprons and kitchen cloths and damask table linens. We’re speaking with Rick Mills, national sales manager and designer.
Rick, where do you find inspiration when designing new products?
We study trend magazines, do our library research, and track the latest fashions.
Are there any specific designers, places or eras that influence you?
We tend to focus on mid-century (1950s, 60s) for styling and select current day trends that work with the retro look.
How do you choose which idea to take to the next step — to product development?
We focus our design direction and then seek customer feedback.
How do you identify the key user audience for your products?
We target upscale specialty stores in the housewares, gift and grocery markets.
Is there an approach or look that joins the functionality, form or emotional appeal of your product line?
Retro is our look for the kitchen and décor textiles.
Where are your products manufactured?
China, Pakistan and India.
How do you see design’s importance in our industry as it moves forward?
We are all about color, fashion and design so it’s vital to what we do.
Tell us about your previous experience with Discover Design and how our Show helped build your relationships with buyers and media.
Discover Design is a fantastic addition to the Show. We have met with several major retailers during the Show with real results!
Can you give us a preview of what you will be showing in your booth in Discover Design?
Our newest addition is our Denim Collection…multi-function aprons for the entire family. We’ll be featuring the Vintage Draper Denim – Adult Butcher Apron, Vintage Draper Denim – Toque (chef hat) and several more new items for men, women and children.
Thank you, Rick, for the intriguing look at your cozy and fashionable home textiles. We look forward to seeing your appealing presentation at your Booth S4268 in Discover Design. Learn more about ASD trendy products at www.artstyledesignliving.com
