Get to know the people behind the stylish products that will appear at the 2014 International Home + Housewares Show in Discover Design. We’ll be posting conversations with exhibitors to give you a glimpse of the inspirations, influences and ideas that go into creating the exciting products that you’ll see in March at McCormick Place.
Today we get acquainted with Finell, a young company based in Austin, Texas. Finell offers luxe, elegant products that enhance a tablescape or decorate and organize ahome. Rebecca Finell previously co-founded Boon Inc., a leading innovator in the baby product industry known for sleek functional design. She served as president, principal designer and chief brand strategist. Boon products can be found in stores nationwide and in more than 65 countries. Rebecca has won every major design award for the juvenile industry and has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, national radio and television shows, books and magazines worldwide. In 2011, Rebecca sold Boon to focus on the launch of Finell Co. We’re speaking with Rebecca Finell, CEO and chief designer.
Rebecca, what inspires you to design new products?
I am usually inspired to create a new product because I can’t find what I am looking for in the marketplace.
Are there any specific designers, places or eras that influence you?
I love the simplicity and fine craftsmanship found in Japanese design and the timelessness of Scandinavian design.
How do you choose which idea to take to the next step — to product development?
Contrary to traditional practice, I let the development process determine the final product line. I start with many ideas and prioritize them based on what I am most excited about. We develop all of them to see what comes of the initial idea. During this process the best products emerge. These are the ones we launch. We don’t make anything until we have perfected it.
How do you identify the key user audience for your products?
Put simply, we don’t. We believe that our products will resonate with design savvy people of all demographics.
Is there an approach or look that joins the functionality, form or emotional appeal of your product line?
We aim for simplicity in both form and function. Our first line is very angular and features some fantastic statement pieces.
How do you see design’s importance in our industry as it moves forward?
I think design will continue to be of vital importance to most industries.
How does Discover Design help you build your brand?
As a new company, it is a great honor to be a called out for our design! Being in Discover Design will give us the opportunity to be located where our corporate culture will thrive. We look forward to meeting our neighboring exhibitors in that area.
Can you give us a preview of what you will be showing in your booth in Discover Design?
Our debut collection includes housewares and personal accessories, including serveware, decorative accessories, party décor and handbags. For example, our GRIP is a serving tray with bands to stabilize beverages; JOIN are silicone placemats that align seamlessly with others to transform into a table runner; and oven-safe HEX baking/serving dishes are a 3-piece set that can double as serving trays.
Thank you, Rebecca, for telling us about your inspirations and your approaches for creating your unique products. We wish you success in your first time exhibiting at our Show. Visit Finell in Discover Design Booth S3074. Learn more about their products at:
