Meet Donna Marie Territo of Abbiamo Tutto!
Where do you find inspiration when designing new products?
In Italy when I am working with the artists that create our products. The city of Florence always provides inspiration along with the Umbrian countryside.
Are there any specific designers, places or eras that influence you?
I am always inspired by classic Italian design elements; many of them are architectural in nature and then the beautiful colors that are so profound during the four seasons of the year in Italy. For example, this past spring I was working in Italy and I was very moved by the amount of poppies that were all over the place – it wasn’t the first time that I saw them during the springtime, but this year they were everywhere – on the side of the road, in gardens, on the hills, anywhere a poppy could grow, there they were! Hence, a new collection for 2013 was created during this trip and it is called Papavero – which simply means “poppy” in Italian.
How do you choose which idea to take to the next step — to product development?
It’s always a challenge. I evaluate the current product mix. I listen to customer feedback in reference to products that they are looking for — the design elements have to be special, and finally and most importantly, the price.
How do you identify the key user audience for your products?
Specialty retailers and catalogs are very important to us. We also create exclusive collections for customers. So we are for those who are looking for DIFFERENT, well-made, Italian ceramics.
Is there an approach or look that joins the functionality, form or emotional appeal of your product line?
Our customers come to us for products that have strong colors and bold designs. We do not sell “safe” Italian ceramics–that is not us. Our customer base expects our products to create focal points and statements.
How do you see design’s importance in our industry as it moves forward?
I believe that a good design is a design that can withstand the test of time. Designs from the Renaissance period are still in style. So for me when I am designing our products and working with my colleagues in Italy we always refer to the “classica.” Our products are classic in design and manufacturing BUT they are made for today’s market. Our lanterns (garden and table lanterns) are a perfect example—they are made on a potters’ wheel by hand and then hand glazed. The cutout design in these pieces fits in a contemporary or traditional setting. Our products can be used in a variety of settings and can be incorporated in many different styles.
Where are your products manufactured?
Only in Italy. We are very proud of this fact. Each item is made using Italian raw materials, made by ITALIANS, in Italy. 100% authentic.
How does Discover Design help to expand your brand?
Discover Design helps bring attention to our products by targeting retailers who are looking for different products – products that stand out – products that demonstrate an artist’s creativity.
Thank you, Donna, for giving us a peek into your process and products. The springtime colors and patterns of your ceramic items will bring Italy to Chicago in March for our buyers. We look forward to seeing more of your designs at Discover Design S3668.
